Another way to detoxify is through chelation therapy, but this type of detoxification is for special circumstances only. It is used for treating serious lead, mercury, arsenic, iron, uranium, plutonium and other toxic metal poisoning. Chelation therapy involves the administration of chelating agents to flush away these toxic and heavy metals from the body.

Common chelating agents used are Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), Aminophenoxyethane-tetraacetic acid (BAPTA), Deferasirox, Deferiprone, Deferoxamine, Diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), Dimercaprol (BAL), Dimercapto-propane sulfonate (DMPS), Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (calcium disodium versante) (CaNa2-EDTA), Ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA), D-penicillamine or Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). These agents may be administered into the body either orally, intravenously or intramuscularly. The administration of which may depend on the agent and the type of poisoning.
